One of the most common remote fobs on the planet is the 3 and 4 button Ford, Lincoln, Mercury square key-chain clicker (pictured above). By far this remote is the easiest remote on the planet to program. Got a key that starts your car? If so, you can program your new remotes in less than a minute. The hardest part about this procedure is learning how to turn the key to the on position without starting it quickly. Once you have that down just count 8 total cycles with a cycle defined as turning the key from off to run and then back to off again. On off, on off, on off, on off, on off, on off, on off, on STOP HERE! You must stop the key in the on position during the 8th cycle. The locks will cycle telling you that the car is ready to receive orders for new remotes to be added. Press any button on each remote and as you press each remote the locks will cycle telling you the car has accepted each unit. Once all remotes are accepted just turn the key back to off- completing the 8th cycle- and the car will disengage programming mode. Test all your remotes to ensure they all work.
I have included step-by-step instructions below so you can save them in your car in case you need to add more remotes later. Besides being the easiest remotes to program, they are also the cheapest, so therefor they are the most likely to break easily. Replacemyremote.com has a 2 year warranty that can be added to your purchase and it extends the 6 month replacement warranty out to a 2 and a half year replacement warranty for only an additional $7.99. For this remote, despite how inexpensive even the aftermarket options are, I would highly suggest adding the extra warranty.
I hope this post was informative and look for video’s to come soon of the actual programming being done in a real vehicle. No fancy CGI here!
Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.
if you already have the key/remote combo and just want to program new fobs to the vehicle as well. It’s not necessary to re-program your working remote head keys as those will continue to work. If you are programming additional non-remote head key remotes for your vehicle then they must all be programmed during this procedure.
You are able to program up to 4 remotes in addition to your remote head keys.
Do not depress the brake pedal during procedure. Timing is critical when on-board programming. Try many times before giving up.
- Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, with the 8th time ending in RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode. (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.)
- Within 20 seconds press any button on the first key-less remote to be programmed. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. If you only have one remote then skip to step 4.
- Within 20 seconds, press any button on the second key-less remote. Door locks will cycle again to confirm programming. Repeat step 3. for all other remotes.
- Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.
